"What Works with Children, Young People and Families - Reflections on International and Local Experience; Possibilities for the Future"

A group of SFBA practioners got together at a practice opportunity on a cold and miserable Wednesday afternoon. We discussed and experimented with how the ideas from Harvey Ratner’s seminar might be applied in our work. We used a small group activity to sweep in multiple perspectives, followed by SF interviewing to develop rich detailed pictures of what we had noticed and valued. Then some people used enactment to experiement with possibilities for their own future practice - others stayed with brainstorming and discussion to design options.

Thank you to Harvey Ratner, his colleagues at BRIEF, and their clients for sharing their work with us and prompting us to try some new possibilities of our own.

Two-day Training – “And What Else? Updating and Refreshing your SFBA Thinking and Skills”

The solution-focused brief approach (SFBA) is an approach which evolves by learning from what is useful for clients (not grand theory). It has a strong tradition of gathering practice-based evidence and reflecting on this evidence to discover what we should do more of. While the approach encourages creativity, it also is guided by a growing body of evidence-based research.

This two-day training course offers opportunities for people who have experience in using the solution-focused brief approach and who would like to extend, deepen and refresh their thinking and skills. It will also be of interest to those who wonder "so what more is there to SFBP besides what I learned in an introductory course?"

This workshop draws on developments in Solution-focused Brief Practice that are Steve de Shazer's and Insoo Kim Berg's legacy, as well developments based on SFBA research.

There will be plenty of opportunuties to experiment and practice. We will use examples - DVDs, video, transcripts and descriptions, drawn from international and ocal practice.

"Small Differences - Unique Styles - Sustaining Focus"

Half-day presented by Svea van der Hoorn
May 2007

The Solution-focused Brief Approach (SFBA) is essentially pragmatic – our task is to co-create processes with people that assist them to move towards the outcomes they hope for in as simple and direct a way as may be possible, given their circumstances. This pragmatism does not however mean that “anything goes” – mindless eclecticism; neither does it mean “there is only one way to do the work effectively” – rigid prescription.

This workshp offers participants opportunities to extend and deepen their practice by reflecting on their own style and examples from master practitioners. The examples cover a wide range of applications of SFBA - individual therapy, family therapy, life coaching, managing meetings, education and business. We will reflect on the small differences that point to their unique styles and how these practitioners, nevertheless, all remain true to the principles and processes of SFBA.
